Reflexology for elderly clients and those in Care Homes
Why reflexology is ideal
Reflexology is a non-invasive treatment beneficial to the elderly. It is a preventive, pain management and maintenance therapy with the added bonus of human connection through touch which in later years becomes a scarcity.
Reflexology engages only the feet meaning the client can sit in comfort in a recliner or lie down as the session takes place. The only clothing needed to be removed is socks. It is a way to relax both mind and body.
There are many conditions associated with aging that reflexology can ease, such as arthritis, constipation, fatigue and cognitive disorders. Foot mobility and leg circulation can also be improved. The therapy not only improves circulation in the lower extremities but also stimulates the nerve endings in the feet, which in turn improves the gait and range of motion of the legs and feet.
Human connection through touch is as important for the elderly as for infants, children and even adults. The caring and respectful touch of the Reflexologist is beneficial to the mental and emotional well-being of an older client.
The human touch the therapist provides helps them ease their loneliness and anxieties. The deep seated positive effects of a caring and respectful touch are invaluable. The undivided attention given during sessions helps the elderly cope with the emotional turmoil that can build up as life changes occur and less time is spent with family and friends.
It is not to say the therapy works to cure all ailments, rather it is an alternative that works well with existing medications and medical treatments with the added bonus of mental and emotional stability. They deserve the best care possible and Reflexology helps in ensuring they get this.

How does it work in a Care home setting?
As a mobile reflexologist I will agree a date to visit the home (with the agreement of the care home manager), taking bookings in advance from residents for the available appointments that day.
I recommend slightly shorter treatments of 30-40 minutes.
When making bookings all potential clients will be screened for any contraindications, to ensure that reflexology is right for them. (Where applicable the GP's permission may be necessary)
I am fully qualified and insured, DBS checked, a member of the Association of Reflexologists, and have previous experience treating elderly clients.
